Maasai Village, Maasai Mara and Amboseli Safari
During this journey, you are the invited guest of Kakuta Hamisi - local Maasai Junior Elder and founder of a non-profit helping the community with education, healthcare, environmental conservation and wildlife preservation.
The focus is a homestay in the Maasai village of Merrueshi, where you will share in the daily lives of the Maasai and will live and eat in the local way. Your rustic bungalows are situated right next to the village and are locally built and operated. Daily activities include nature walks lead by the warriors to view the wildlife and learn about native plants used for both food and medicine. The warriors stay near you in the lodge area and are available throughout the day and night for you to engage with and learn from.
You’ll also take in the sights and sounds of Amboseli and Maasai Mara on safari with your Maasai friends, with visits to natural watering holes for encounters with an array of Kenyan wildlife. On these two amazing safaris, you’ll search for resident elephants, zebra, wildebeests, giraffes, impala, leopards, lions, hippos, antelope, rhinos, wild dogs, hyenas, cheetah, buffalo and more than 400 species of birds while enjoying an incredible safari lodge stay.
ARRIVE IN NAIROBI, KENYA
You will be picked up at the airport and escorted to your hotel in downtown Nairobi. Get checked in and relax.
This morning you’ll have time to relax and acclimatize yourself with the local weather and time zone. Activities for the day include a visit to the Giraffe Center and the famous elephant orphanage in the outskirts of Nairobi National Park. Meet orphan elephants and learn about their life at the orphanage and in the wild. We’ll have lunch at the Utamaduni Craft Center. Return to the hotel after lunch and overnight.
NAIROBI - MAASAI MARA
Shortly after early breakfast we’ll depart Nairobi for Maasai Mara Game Reserve. We’ll drive through Kenya's highlands and stop midway to get a glimpse of the Great Rift Valley – a magnificent natural trench stretching approximately 3,700 miles from Lebanon into Mozambique in East Africa. We should arrive at the lodge in time for lunch. There will be an afternoon game drive starting at 4 pm.
MAASAI MARA SAFARI
The Maasai Mara encompasses vast open rolling plains as well as grasslands with seasonal river lets. The entire area of the park is situated within the enormous Great Rift Valley. The reserve is famous for the annual wildlife migration, with over 1 million wildebeest and thousands of zebra crossing from the Serengeti plains in Tanzania. The reserve is home to hundreds of elephants, hippos, lions, hyenas, buffalo, and thousands of other kinds of animals. Over 500 species of birds are abundant in the reserve, including ostrich, larks, sun birds, weavers, and the lilac breasted roller. Morning and afternoon game drives will be provided each day.
After breakfast we’ll drive from Maasai Mara and arrive to Nairobi by noon in time for lunch. Depart Nairobi after lunch and arrive to Maasai Simba Camp late in the afternoon. Upon our arrival, we’ll meet our Maasai hosts and settle into Maasai Simba camp, which is in the village of Merrueshi.
The entire camp is nestled under a canopy of indigenous acacia trees on the banks of the seasonal Kiboko River. Mornings will typically begin with a bush walking safari lead by the Maasai warriors. Merrueshi is a wildlife corridor between Amboseli and Chyulu Hills National Parks. Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, eland, kudu, warthog, gazelle, impala and over 400 species of birds roam freely in the area. The Maasai know this land in a way no one else does and the warriors will interpret everything from footprints, animal droppings, animal noises, herbal medicine, and more. You will be able to relax at the camp or you can immerse yourselves with several activities that include a visit to local villages, schools, and the health center. Your visits with Maasai village leaders, elders, women, herbalists, teachers, and nurses will allow you to learn about every aspect of the Maasai tribal way of life.
AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK
After having coffee or tea, hop into 4x4 Land Cruiser and drive to Amboseli National Park, 30 minutes away from Maasai Simba Camp. Amboseli National Park covers 150 square miles in southern Kenya, near the Tanzanian border. The name Amboseli comes from the word "empusel," which in the language of the local Maasai tribe means “salty dust.” Amboseli is nevertheless quite lush in places, because the melting snows of Kilimanjaro flow underground into the park, continually feeding water to springs, swamps, and marshes.
Amboseli has always been a favorite spot for wildlife. In addition to the 900 or so elephants that live there, zebra, wildebeests, giraffes, impala, leopards, lions, hippos, antelope, rhinos, wild dogs, hyenas, cheetah, buffalo, and more than 400 species of birds all gather in the haven of the park. We will enjoy lunch at the lodge and then enjoy an afternoon safari before heading back to the village to overnight.
MERRUESHI - NAIROBI
Enjoy your final morning at Simba Camp and pack up. After lunch we will head back to Nairobi and to the airport for your night flight back home.
