Sustainable Coffee & Community Resource Center in Cameroon

Paco Catherine Tammy Cameroon Coffee HouseMeet Catherine.
Catherine was the mother of Crooked Trails co-founder Tammy Leland’s husband. She was known in her community for being a powerhouse and an advocate for women’s health and education. She died young and unexpectedly one year before Tammy and her husband were to return to Cameroon with her grandson. Her tenacity and perseverance has been something they cherish everyday.

Like Catherine, we believe that access to education and good health care is essential to breaking the cycle of poverty. Women are more likely to care for their families once they are able to care for themselves.

In an effort to keep Catherine’s mission alive, we are working with local women in Cameroon and have combined her mission with our efforts for sustainable solutions for women in Cameroon. The women of Cameroon are looking for more than resources. They want something that will last long after the volunteers and helping hands go home.

Many local nonprofits and community groups are doing exceptional work in Cameroon and we want to help them excel with a model that empowers the communities to lift themselves out of poverty, breaking the dependency on handouts and being a part of the change. This is a different kind of help that will last longer and reap much larger benefits.

Catherines Coffee House logoYou may be asking — how we will do this?

Catherine’s Coffee House is a community-initiated, women-owned business where 100% of profits support access to education, healthcare, and advocacy for women.

Funds raised during our initial campaign from April 2016 to November 2016 will be used to purchase the land, build the coffee house and support the start-up phase of the business in Limbe, Cameroon.

  • Like many NPOs in Cameroon, Catherine’s Coffee House will seek to increase access to healthcare and education for women.
  • As domestic coffee consumption is set to boom in Sub-Saharan Africa, this project will be tapping into a new market where potential already exists.
  • Based in coffee hotbed Seattle, partner organization Crooked Trails will bring knowledge of the market to this project.
  • Long term, this project will operate under a social business model where profits will funnel back to support growth instead of relying on continued donor support.
  • This will provide the means for the women who own and run it to empower more women in the community.
  • Catherine’s Coffee House will also serve as a community gathering space where women, families, groups and teens can come together to solve community needs and access resources not elsewhere available.

OUR IMPACT

Healthcare, quality education, and advocacy for women
In creating a successful business that is owned by women who already work to improve their community, CCH will expand the reach of these women and create new opportunities for them to increase their work. By placing the ownership of improvement in the hands of the people, the chances of success are greatly improved. Either directly through providing information, access to technology, and resources, or indirectly through supporting the women’s groups who own the shop, CCH will fight inequality and injustice from all sides.

Lifecycle of opportunity
By exclusively sourcing locally, responsibly, and cooperatively grown coffee beans CCH will help support farmers and families in the community. CCH will become a community gathering and resource center providing a space for the community to grow together. Profits from the business will then be funneled back into the community through the work of the women who own the shop. This cycle will benefit everyone in the community and raise the standard of living for everyone involved.

Catalyst for change
Catherine’s Coffee House will serve as a community gathering place where people, women in particular, can access resources to tackle the issues they face. Instead of being a solitary struggle, the challenges facing women in the community can come into the light and be faced down together. The shop will also be a free and safe meeting place for people to come together to learn, grow, and connect. CCH will be a place of art, culture, music, technology, and progression in the community where people can open their minds to new possibilities.

We cannot raise this money without you. We need your support!

Your generous funding will allow us to host projects which raise awareness and help show the community how to run the coffeehouse. A portion of the funds will also be donated to people in need. Assisting in business education and lending a voice are our main priority. It will assist us with the cost of further development of our organization. More importantly you get the chance to join us at Catherine’s Coffee House.
