Arrival in Havana, Cuba

Be welcomed to Havana by your host and our very good friend Mauricio and enjoy a coffee on his terrace overlooking the Malecon and the ocean. Let Mauricio tell you wonderful wild stories of the city and his incredible life in Cuba.

Take in Havana "at a first glance" on a cruise with a local guide in a classic American car, and enjoy a drink on the terrace of the famous Art Deco Hotel Nacional.

Overnight at the Casa Particular

MEALS:  None

After breakfast at the casa particular, take the morning to explore on foot, experiencing the colonial magnificence and funky art-filled alleys of Havana. Check out the second-hand book market in the Plaza de Armas, browsing through the classic and new books and an amazing variety of revolutionary propaganda posters from all over the world. Listen awhile to street musicians practicing and trying out new songs. Don't forget to stop for a Cuban pastry (pastele) and a strong sweet cup of coffee!

In the afternoon, a classic old American convertible car will pick you up to discover the life of Hemingway and take in many of his old haunts in Havana and the surrounding area. You will end your tour in Cojimar, the small fishing village where Hemingway moored his boat. It was also the location of the old Spanish fort (1649) presently occupied by the Cuban Coast Guard. Very few people actually stay in Cojimar. It is a quaint little town that will provide a glimpse into the quiet life of Hemingway.

In the evening, explore the different genres of Cuban music with guide and jazz singer, Meiby.

In the afternoon, enjoy some free time to explore on Havana on your own. We can give you many suggestions for wonderful places to visit and things to do.

Las Terrazas

After breakfast at your Casa Particular, take a taxi to Las Terrazas. The ride is about 1 hour from Havana.

Las Terrazas is a small rural community set in the heart of a 25,000 hectare UNESCO biosphere reserve in the Sierra del Rosario. The pioneering eco-village of Las Terrazas dates back to a reforestation project in 1968 and the site of the earliest coffee plantations in Cuba. Close by, in the picturesque whitewashed village that overlooks a small lake, there’s a vibrant art community with open studios, woodworking and pottery workshops. But the region’s biggest attraction is its verdant natural surroundings, which are ideal for hiking, relaxing and birdwatching.

Your host and our friend, Kenny, will show you around and give you a special view of Las Terrazas. You'll stay at Kenny's wonderful hotel, one of Cuba's few eco hotels, which offers fantastic views of the Las Terrazas community.

Overnight at hotel

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then Kenny will meet up with you for an adventure in the hills and forests of Las Terrazas. Climb up to the top of the small mountain (Loma del Taburete) to see the memorial to Che Guevara, who hid out in these hills and trained guerilla fighters. Or, visit a local coffee farmer with his small but flourishing crop and hear the stories of the enormous French-run coffee plantations that once dominated the area. From the ruins of the once powerful Buena Vista, built at the crest of a mountain, get a glimpse of the ocean.

Around mid-day, you'll take a taxi to Vinales, about an hour and a half away.

Lush and deeply green, the Valle de Vinales is a UNESCO World Heritage site and arguably one of Cuba's best natural settings. Between long valleys and rocky landscapes, Viñales give us a true look into the rural life of a Cuban farmer. Farmers work in the fields with their oxen, preparing the land for the variety of fruits, vegetables, coffee and tobacco. Dotted with traditional single-story farmhouses and warm, friendly people, Viñales is the true heart of Cuba.

Upon arrival, you'll meet our friend (and a real character!) Carlos, locally known as 'El Cowboy'. Ride through the red clay paths of Vinales, around the limestone cliffs and tobacco fields, on horseback. El Cowboy will guide you through the land, sharing stories of his family and friends in the area who have worked these fields for a century. You'll also get a personal class on how to roll the best handmade cigar from the best tobacco in all of Cuba!

Overnight at the Casa Particular

You will have the day to choose from a variety of activities, including relaxing at the family home, biking the surrounding valley, or walking to take in the amazing viewpoints. The hills around Vinales Valley are full of miradores (viewpoints) with long sweeping views of the limestone cliffs and tobacco fields. Rent a bike or hike on tree-lined paths to reach the best spots. Visit the botanical garden at the edge of town to learn about the cultivation of medical and ornamental plants as well as the native plant species.
