Trekking In Oaxaca

Oaxaca Mexico landscape

Oaxaca is known among adventurous travelers to be a destination of intense cultural activity and indigenous traditions that bring to life the history of
intricate weaving, hand-crafted pottery, unique cuisine and stunning styles of dress. What many don’t realize is that Oaxaca has maintained these traditions in part by the difficulty of the mountainous terrain that discouraged conquering indigenous tribes and Europeans alike, leaving communities much as they were found hundreds of years ago. This People of Oaxaca Mexicoterrain is where we today find the interplay of incredible natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and an up-close look into the world of traditional rural life in the Oaxacan Sierras.

On this program, you will trek through the Oaxacan Sierras. In an effort to bring revenue to their communities without disrupting their way of life, these communities have created a rustic tour destination by linking their small towns by trails lined with traditional and medicinal plants, maintained by the community members, and guided by locals. Village trek trail and hikers Oaxaca MexicoYour local guide is well-versed in the medicinal properties of the plants and the history of the region, and will often hand you leaves and flowers to taste as you trek into the mountains. In each town, there are rustic cabins that offer staggering views of the steep cliffs, and hammocks to swing in as the sun goes down after a long day of hiking. Local villagers take turns providing meals either in the guest cabin’s kitchen or in their own homes; you will see the pride the community members take in the cleanliness, comfort, and natural beauty their guests experience.

Below you will find a sample itinerary, but like all Crooked Trails trips, this is 100% customizable. Once you’ve decided that Oaxaca is where you can envision yourself, we will work with you to design the trip around your personal preferences and interests, timeframe, budget, and physical fitness level. With 42 trails and options for hiking, biking or horseback riding, the options are virtually endless. Our partner communities will sometimes have service opportunities, such as reforestation, trail maintenance, and community health projects, that you can opt to take part in. From mezcal to medicinal plants, let your fascination guide you; we offer many unique custom experiences to make the experience all your own.

Optional extensions include a visit to the rugged Oaxacan coast, shorter day trips to explore the rich local traditions of textiles and pottery, market tours and cooking classes, and much more.
