Join us for an experience from the Valles Centrales to the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca to experience the traditional festivities of “Día de Muertos.” You will have the privilege of joining the people of the communities in their celebrations, from gathering flowers, constructing the altar, and making traditional mole and “pan de muerto” (bread of the dead), to living the experience of the parades and learning more about the mysteries of pre-Hispanic life in the Oaxaca region.

OCTOBER 28th - OAXACA MAGICAL

Today, we will head to one of Oaxaca's most beautiful regions, the Sierra Norte, so pack your bags.

On our way to Sierra Norte, we'll visit some important cultural sites in Oaxaca. First, we will go to Santa María del Tule to visit the legendary “árbol del Tule” (Tule Tree), an ahuehuete tree more than 2000 years old and famous for having the greatest diameter in the world. It would take more than thirty people with their arms extended to reach around it!

We will continue to Teotitlán del Valle, famous for artisans who make rugs using wool and natural dyes.

We continue our travel to the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca. Here we will start our visit to the Pueblos Mancomunados, a group of Zapotec communities that in 1994 created a community agro-eco-tourism project.

First, we'll visit Benito Juárez, where wewill meet a local family and help prepare the traditional mole, tamales, and chocolate used as offerings on altars to the dead.

OCTOBER 29th - LATUVI

After breakfast, we will begin a walking tour that will take us all the way to the Land of the Rolled Leaf (Latuvi in Zapotec).

On the way, we will appreciate a grand variety of characteristic flora and enjoy beautiful landscapes. After lunch, we will visit a local family and learn how to make traditional “pan de Muertos,” which we will enjoy at the end with a delicious mug of hot chocolate.

OCTOBER 30th - LATUVI

After breakfast, we will begin the day with a short hike to help a local family collect flowers for their traditional Day of the Dead altar.

We will then return to their home and help prepare and decorate the altar, gaining a closer understanding of this meaningful local tradition.

After lunch, we will visit Mrs. Martha to learn how honey water is extracted from agave and used to prepare traditional drinks such as pulque and tepache, often enjoyed during community celebrations.

In the afternoon, we will have a relaxing Temazcal, a traditional steam bath using medicinal plants.

We will end the day with dinner and an overnight stay in the community.

OCTOBER 31st - DAY OF THE DEAD

After breakfast, we will leave the community of Latuvi and travel to Oaxaca City.

Along the way, we will visit Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán to learn about the traditional process of making sand rugs, a unique art form associated with the Day of the Dead celebrations.

After lunch, we will continue to Oaxaca City, check in at the hotel, and enjoy some free time to relax or explore independently.

In the evening, we will experience the magic and mysticism of Oaxaca’s Day of the Dead traditions on a four-hour cemetery tour.

Visiting a local cemetery, we will witness this deeply meaningful celebration among decorated graves, copal, music, and vibrant colors, gaining a closer understanding of the traditions honoring the faithfully departed. We will return to the hotel around midnight.

NOVEMBER 1 - ¡OAXACA INMORTAL!

After breakfast, we will visit Monte Albán. The “Zapotec Empire” is strategically situated on a mountain in the middle of the Valles Centrales, from which all flanks can be guarded. Be amazed by the grand plaza, the juego de pelota (ball game), los danzantes (“the dancers”—ancient paintings), Tomb #7, and much more.

We’ll return to the center of the city for lunch. We have free time for a short while.

3:00 PM: Time to paint faces for the Day of the Dead!

6:00 PM: “Comparsa” tour, 4 hours.

We will arrive in the neighborhood of Jalatlaco, at the house of the family that organizes the traditional Comparsa (parade) of the Dead, to join the preparations of the group that each year shows its enthusiasm for carrying on the tradition. The horn will sound, announcing the traditional “Muerteada” and letting the neighborhoods and pueblos know that it is time to begin the Day of the Dead celebrations. Everyone gets ready to head out into the streets and march with the bands and hundreds in costumes. Enjoy this passionate tradition with us.

11:00 PM: Return to the hotel, retire for the night.

NOVEMBER 2nd - MITLA-THE CITY OF THE DEAD

After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a couple of free hours in the morning for some last-minute shopping or to relax.

At 11:00 AM, we will begin our journey to Santa Catarina Minas with a visit to a family of women skilled in backstrap-loom weaving.

Over traditional chocolate and freshly baked bread, they will share stories about their daily lives, their weaving traditions, and the role of textiles in their community.

We will then continue to a family-run mezcal palenque led by a woman mezcal master who learned the art of working with maguey and producing mezcal alongside her father.

Here, we will meet different agave species found in Oaxaca and learn the full artisanal process, from seed selection, planting, and transplanting to harvesting and distillation. The mezcal is produced using traditional methods, including distillation in clay pots, preserving an ancestral practice passed down through generations.

We will finish the experience with a tasting of three house mezcals, accompanied by a delicious traditional meal prepared by women from the community.

In the evening, at 8:00 PM, we will gather at Tierra del Sol for a special farewell dinner, celebrating the experiences, flavors, and connections shared throughout the journey.
