The Chocó Andino Hospitality & Ecotourism Skills Initiative in Ecuador
The Maquipucuna Foundation, a nonprofit leader in conservation and sustainable development, has spent the last 37 years working to protect the extraordinary biodiversity of Ecuador’s Chocó Andino region. As one of the country’s pioneers in regenerative ecotourism and private land conservation, the Foundation is deeply committed to preserving this globally important ecosystem while empowering local communities.
Through a combination of scientific research, sustainable economic opportunities, and community-led initiatives, Maquipucuna has created a model where conservation and community thrive side by side.
At the heart of Maquipucuna’s mission are the residents of Santa Marianita and neighboring areas within the Nanegal Parish. These community members are not only key stakeholders but also active participants in the Foundation’s efforts.
Many are employed at the Maquipucuna Ecolodge and contribute directly to conservation and tourism projects. To ensure that the Foundation’s programs reflect the needs and aspirations of the people it serves, regular community consultations, workshops, and participatory planning sessions are held to foster ongoing collaboration and shared ownership of its initiatives.
guiding with specialties such as birdwatching and bear tracking. With a focus on practical techniques, such as portion management, food presentation, and guest interaction, the initiative aims to enhance service quality and elevate the overall visitor experience in the region.
Each workshop will train approximately 20 participants, providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to enhance their job performance, access better employment opportunities, and contribute to the development of a vibrant, sustainable tourism economy. In turn, travelers visiting Maquipucuna Ecolodge and other nearby destinations will enjoy more meaningful, professionally delivered experiences, which will help build the region’s reputation and generate return visits. By developing local talent, the initiative fosters a virtuous cycle of empowerment, pride, and prosperity.
Crooked Trails funding will directly support this initiative by covering the costs of skilled trainers, workshop materials, and the logistical coordination needed to deliver impactful, hands-on education. With this investment, Maquipucuna aims to strengthen the human infrastructure of ecotourism in the Chocó Andino, creating a replicable model that can serve as an inspiration for other regions striving to balance conservation with community well-being.
