Community Running Tourism - ladakh, India

Now, he dedicates his life to ensuring that other children in the region receive a quality education while working to preserve their rich cultural heritage. In partnership with Global Pearls, Sonam channels his passion into grassroots efforts that empower local communities, particularly in the remote village of Lingshed.
Lingshed, the largest of the surrounding villages, faces immense challenges due to its isolation. Residents rely heavily on subsistence agriculture, with limited access to healthcare, electricity, and clean water. Previously, the village benefited from income generated by trekking tourism, but a newly built road that bypasses the trail has led to a sharp decline in visitors. This economic downturn spurred Sonam to explore innovative ways to bring new energy—and income—into the region without compromising its traditions or autonomy.
To meet this goal, Sonam and his team are developing the Singela Marathon—a multi-tiered running event designed to attract tourists while inspiring local youth. The event includes a fun run and 4K race for children, and longer distances such as 11K, 21K, and trail races for visiting athletes. The strategy is simple but powerful: visiting runners will need to stay several nights in
Ladakh, India Community Running Tourism Grant Recipient
This unique community-based tourism project is a collaboration between Global Pearls and Ladakh, India. Global Pearl’s mission is to empower local changemakers in developing countries to reduce suffering and foster hope among marginalized populations.
In the high-altitude villages of Ladakh’s Zanskar mountain range, Sonam Dorje is leading an inspiring initiative to uplift his community. A dynamic and deeply committed individual, Sonam overcame enormous challenges in pursuit of his own education, including a dangerous solo journey through the Himalayas at age 11.
the village, bringing business to local families who can provide lodging and meals. This model creates a sustainable source of income while celebrating both athleticism and cultural exchange.
A key player in the project is Nawang Tsering, a celebrated local runner who has won the Ladakh Marathon three years in a row. Nawang’s success has sparked enthusiasm among young villagers and adults alike, many of whom now see running as a viable path to both personal achievement and economic opportunity. In August 2024, a pilot version of the Singela Marathon brought together 105 local participants and culminated in a joyful community celebration. Prize money was awarded, and several students went on to compete—and win—at the prestigious Ladakh Marathon.
Looking ahead, Sonam and Nawang plan to officially register the Singela Marathon for its full launch in August 2025, to make it an annual event. They aim to attract both international and domestic runners, particularly those looking to acclimatize before other high-altitude races. With support from Global Pearls and potential funding from Crooked Trails, this project promises to create a lasting impact by blending sport, cultural pride, and economic resilience, putting Lingshed on the map as both a destination and a thriving, self-driven community.
